]]> On the evening after the last day of the Hanukkah festival, hundreds of Ami students from Tel-Aviv area gathered in Tel-Aviv for an uplifting Hanukkah party. The audio-visual performance “To be Jewish” was played by “Midreshet Ofra”.

Rav Chaim Drukman Shlit”a, Rosh Hayeshiva of Or Etzion, that heads Ami school was guest of honor together with Rav Yitzchak Peretz head of the Giyur courts, and Rav Eliyahu Ben-Dehan, deputy Minister of Religions.

Rav Yitzchak Peretz addressed the pupils and spoke about the certainty of belief in the almighty, whereas Rav Ben-Dahan discussed issues of promoting Giyur with a large group of Ami teachers from all of Israel assembled in a near by room. Rav Drukman delivered a fascinating insight on Conversion from Jewish eyes to the teachers.

Rav Ben-Dahan stated that in the course of the last Knesset, many efforts where put in trying to make conversion achievable. “You are the answer”, he said to the teachers, “you are those who can make the process inviting”.

Carmi Ronen, manger of Ami, told the students that Hanukkah should be celebrated with an historic perspective, understanding its role in Jewish history, and it being, in essence, the first independence day. This is why we chose  the play “To be Jewish” that connects us to our past with a bright look forward.

Naftali Knadler, CEO of Or Etzion Institutions, was happy to see the growth of Ami, an Or Etzion institution. “I’m happy to take part in this process part of the redemption of the Jewsih people.

]]> As part of studying the Jewish dietary laws (kashrut) and as part of learning about preparations for the Shabbat (Sabbath) Ami students experienced baking Challot (special Shabbat bread), and setting aside the portion for the kohanim (priests) called Challah.

What does one bless before setting aside the portion?

There are two versions for reciting the blessing:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם‮, ‬אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ‮ ‬בְּמִצְוֹתָיו‮, ‬וְצִיוָּנוּ לְהַפְרִישׁ חַלָּה תְרוּמָה‮. ‬‮(‬ספרדים‮)‬
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם‮, ‬אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ‮ ‬בְּמִצְוֹתָיו‮, ‬וְצִיוָּנוּ לְהַפְרִישׁ חַלָּה‮ [‬יש המוסיפים‮:‬‮ ‬מִן הָעִיסָה]. ‬‮(‬אשכנזים‮)‬

Blessed are though G-d, master of the universe, the sanctified us in his commandments and commanded us to set aside challah from the dow.

]]> “Shvut” is a special program of “Ami”, in conjunction with “Masa” program of the Jewish Agency, aimed at French speaking youngsters aged 18-30. The conversion program is solely intended for Aliyah permitted individuals who are grandchildren of Jews.

The gole is to prepare this young students for conversion and fully blend them into Israeli society. The program takes place in Yakir, a religious and calm settlement, that accompanies the students on their journey to Judaism.

The program takes place for a year, in which the students participate in 40 weekly hours of study if Hebrew, Jewish History, religion and culture. A rich  program of trips and educational tours throughout the year assists in building their bonds to Judaism.

The participants volunteer in agriculture and the army for a week each during the program to get a feeling of the challenges in the Jewsih country.

Jewish and Hebrew studies are studied together, since they are not to be parted. This is the only conversion program in French that focuses on Jewish and Zionist life in Israel as part of becoming Jewish.

In the near future we are hoping to initiate new “Masa” programs in English, Spanish and German.

]]> A pioneering group of Ami students ventured on a trip to the Tomb of the Patriarchs and the Jewish settlement in Hebron.

The genuine connection to the forefathers was unforgettable, many visiting the Tomb for the first time in their lives.

In the Tomb known as “The Cave of the Patriarchs” are buried our forefathers, Avraham and Sarah, Yitschak and Rivka, Yaakov and Leah as well as Adam and Eve.

When have you last visited the Tomb?
