As part of studying the Jewish dietary laws (kashrut) and as part of learning about preparations for the Shabbat (Sabbath) Ami students experienced baking Challot (special Shabbat bread), and setting aside the portion for the kohanim (priests) called Challah.

What does one bless before setting aside the portion?

There are two versions for reciting the blessing:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם‮, ‬אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ‮ ‬בְּמִצְוֹתָיו‮, ‬וְצִיוָּנוּ לְהַפְרִישׁ חַלָּה תְרוּמָה‮. ‬‮(‬ספרדים‮)‬
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם‮, ‬אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ‮ ‬בְּמִצְוֹתָיו‮, ‬וְצִיוָּנוּ לְהַפְרִישׁ חַלָּה‮ [‬יש המוסיפים‮:‬‮ ‬מִן הָעִיסָה]. ‬‮(‬אשכנזים‮)‬

Blessed are though G-d, master of the universe, the sanctified us in his commandments and commanded us to set aside challah from the dow.
